Voltaiq — Battery Data Platform

A reusable design system for an enterprise battery-data platform — built from user research and personas up through a Lab Management Dashboard mobile app.

Overview

Battery-powered electrification is shifting beyond consumer electronics to electric vehicles and energy storage. Problem: there aren't enough trained battery engineers to fill the open positions electrification projects need; too many battery materials and vendors to evaluate; performance and lifetime are hard to predict; preparing data for analysis takes too much time; time-to-market goals are unrealistic; and moving from a pilot line to high-volume manufacturing is its own challenge.

Solution: a single platform for all battery data — comparing materials, analyzing performance, and reviewing results effectively. Advanced analytics reveal variations and trends critical to predicting a battery's lifetime, and results are summarized and reported quickly enough to collaborate with vendors in real time and speed up development and testing.

Approach — Personas

Four personas anchored the design: an engineer, a technician, a group manager, and a C-level manager — each documented with personality, goals, communication habits, and challenges. Tom Wolfgang, the engineer persona, is an automotive engineer under pressure to select the best battery for his company's vehicles while staying conservative on budget and quality control.

Screens — Lab Management Dashboard

A case study within the platform: the Utilization Report was built to help upper management see channel utilization across their labs — a gap surfaced directly by Voltaiq Core's external customers, who had no high-level summary dashboard and had been requesting one from level managers.

Mapped as an impact goal: grow subscribers and get current subscribers to renew their licenses, by getting engineer managers using the app more frequently and interacting with more analytics, and by giving C-level managers a reason to renew.

Screens — Mobile App

The Lab Management Dashboard shipped as a mobile app — a channel-utilization donut chart front and center, so a manager can see lab throughput at a glance instead of digging into the full desktop platform.

Outcome

A reusable design system for Voltaiq's enterprise data platform, built from persona research and journey maps through to a shipped mobile dashboard — work that helped win Amazon 126 and the Frost & Sullivan 2019 Innovation Award.
