Fuse solution overview with a laptop dashboard

McKesson RelayHealth — Fuse™

A data platform that demystifies healthcare data management — from acquisition to insight — for large health systems making decisions on quality of care and cost.

Challenges

Obtaining data-driven insights is inevitable, and value-based care participation is inevitable too — but healthcare data is hard. Health users are under immense pressure to identify savings opportunities, yet it's difficult regarding process. Too many disparate tools and vendors to evaluate, and remediating expertise is scarce and time-consuming, complex claims data often unusable.

Even after savings are identified and established, they may risk being underused; the reliance on manual processes, which are costly as well as prone to misinterpretation of contract terms and configuration errors.

Solutions

The Fuse™ data platform is a foundation — aggregating and curating at scale the raw material of healthcare analytics. It works with EMRs, EDWs, and apps, built on a data-lake aggregation methodology where all data is accepted and can be leveraged when queried, with FHIR®©-compatible formats for legacy systems and SMART-on-FHIR apps alike. Outcomes-driven solutions on top of it: Fuse™ Analytics Explorer helps visualize and interact with data to see patterns and reveal hidden insight, and Fuse™ ID Link helps fix patient data fragmentation.

Vision

“Fuse™ demystifies data management, from acquisition to insights, through simple and visual interaction, guiding large health systems as they make decisions to improve their quality of care while reducing costs.”

Approach — Workshops & Journey Mapping

The direction for Fuse™ came out of facilitated workshops with the team — prep, facilitation, and wrap-up phases — followed by journey mapping across five user categories: clinical connectivity users, thinkers/strategists/decision makers, business users, external tech users, and internal support services.

“…create a unified and seamless ecosystem across users that is role relevant.” “…a unified experience that empowers users across clinical and analytics activities.”

Screens — Onboarding & Data Acquisition

The onboarding flow walks a new customer through setting up accounts and getting started on the Fuse™ Portal, mapped against identified users (physicians, executives, builders, implementation analysts) and their pain points (manual process, ambiguity, support needed, lack of knowledge).

Screens — Dry Run Tool

The Dry Run Tool handles preparing, loading, transforming, and evaluating data before it goes live — addressing pain points around data format, self-service gaps, high touch by development, and custom data handling.

Approach — Experience Principles

“As a team we worked through a series of collaborative exercises that helped us define 6 experience principles to set the direction for Fuse™.” The six: Connect (cross-team communication and consistent workflows), Flex (flexible enough to fit each unique use case), Guide (direct users to what they need, when), Solve (convey the actionable nature of Fuse™ insights), Simplify (reduce complexity down to the option that fits the need), and Validate (feel inadequate in a data-driven environment; positive messaging and rewarding visual cues).

“Apps that serve a culture of empowered users.”

Outcome

A validated set of experience principles and a portal design direction for Fuse™ — grounded in workshop research, journey mapping across five user categories, and tools (Dry Run, Dashboard Builder, KPI tracking) built to make raw healthcare data usable instead of just available.
